Earth Day

April 22

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes events in more than 193 countries, which are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

Earth Day History
By the early 1960s Americans were becoming aware of the effects of pollution on the environment. Rachel Carson’s 1962 bestseller “Silent Spring” raised the concerns of the dangerous effects of pesticides on America’s countrysides. In 1969 fire on Cleveland’s Cuyahoga River shed light on the problem of chemical waste disposal.  An oil slick on the Cuyahoga River – polluted from decades of industrial waste – caught fire on a Sunday morning in June 1969 near the Republic Steel mill, causing about $100,000 worth of damage to two railroad bridges.

This year lets Make a difference: The goal is to have as many people as possible to participate in our 2019 wildlife plantathon.
